Glass Cleaning Techniques and Tips

Cleaning glass surfaces when the sun is blazing can lead to undesirable results.

Cleaning glass can be messy on the coffee table, windows, or vehicle windscreen. Nobody likes watching all that elbow grease they put in result in ugly streaks and lint residue on the glass. Fortunately, homeowners can use various tips and techniques for spotless cleaning of their glass surfaces.

Let's consider a few cleaning methods and some helpful tips.

Clean on cloudy days

Cleaning glass surfaces when the sun is blazing can lead to undesirable results. The heat from the sun causes the cleaning solution to evaporate or dry up, leaving streaks behind. Cloudy days, however, allow the solution to last for adequate cleaning and a streak-free shine.

Clear the glass of dirt and dust

Dust, dirt, and debris are notorious for leaving unpleasant marks. Before applying the cleaning solution, wipe off glass surfaces to remove any loose debris or dust particles and prevent smudging. A microfiber cloth comes in handy for dry dusting since it's lint-free.

Apply the cleaning solution sparingly

While generously applying the cleaning solution is good, too much can result in suds or foam on the glass surface. Suds leave streaks behind when the glass dries.

Also, try to avoid applying the cleaning solution on the framework. Some solutions have abrasive chemicals that may cause damage to wood or plastic and make metal grills rust. Covering the frame with a cloth can help absorb any drips.

Clean from top to bottom

Try to use a top-down approach after applying or spraying the cleaning solution. A squeegee works best when cleaning the glass from the top downwards. It allows room to remove extra dirt in an overlapping motion without spreading it. In addition, it ensures that the cleaning solution doesn't trickle to already cleaned places.

Dirt accumulates in hard-to-reach places that a squeegee or a cloth can't reach, like corners. In such cases, using a cotton bud or a toothbrush dipped in the cleaning solution can help remove the particles.

Clean the glass surface in sections

Another useful method is cleaning glass surfaces in sections. Working in smaller sections guarantees that each part receives equal effort for an overall shine. It also ensures the cleaning solution doesn't dry up before wiping.

Steer clear of rags, newspapers, and paper towels

Newspapers, paper towels, and rags are usually misused for wiping glass. The papers break down when they come in contact with water, leaving print marks and lint on the glass surface. Some rags may also scratch the glass. Microfiber cloths are a great alternative when drying glass surfaces since they are absorbent and leave no streaks or lint behind.
